If you are contemplating starting your own small business you should really write your own business plan before doing anything else. This is the only way to know if your idea or plan is viable. When you write your own business plan you will need to research your competition, you will need to come up with a marketing/advertising plan. You will zero in on your target market and really get to know your prospective customers. You will figure out exactly how much your start up costs will be and if you need additional funding. You will learn when you should reach the break even point. You will have a good handle on your cash flow. A few years ago I had an idea for a business that I knew was a winner. I started my research into how to get it off the ground and quickly discovered I was going to need write a business plan. When I saw how complicated it was I gave up before even trying.
My dream wouldn't die however, so I decided to go for it. I reasoned that if I couldn't even write my own business plan, then maybe I didn't have what it takes to be a business owner. I had to prove to myself that I could do it.
I scoured the Internet and read books and compared many different plans against the SBA's suggested format. After all of this research and intense study (and very little sleep) I came up with my business plan.
I took it to the local Small Business Development Center for their input and advise. They were floored that I had done it myself without a template or software. They agreed that it was ready to go and suggested local banks that were favorable toward small business start-ups.
The loan officers I presented my business plan to were so impressed that they immediately took my request seriously and approved it to be forwarded to the SBA.
What a tremendously rewarding experience that was!
I have since gone on to write many, many more business plans and have created a system that simplifies the process in a very easy, step-by-step procedure.
